Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Casalnuovo, Alessio Ascalesi was raised in Umbria, entering seminary in Spoleto, where he was ordained priest in June 1895. Entering the Congregation of the Most Precious Blood, he was named pastor of the Montemurano parish of which he served previously as its economus and vicar forane of the Collegio San Bartolomeo in the city of Montefalco. Elected bishop of the diocese of Muro Lucano, Ascalesi received his episcopal consecration in Montefalco on August 8, 1909. Transferred to diocese of Sant'Agata dei Goti on June 19, 1911, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Benevento on December 9, 1915. Pope Benedict XV created him cardinal priest in the consistory of December 4, 1916, with the title of San Callisto at the early age of forty four. His successor, Pius XI named him archbishop of the metropolitan see of Naples on March 7, 1924, which see he led up to his death twenty eight years later. The Neapolitan hospital and the Major Archiepiscopal Seminary of the city of Naples bear his name.
