Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Castres, Victor-Félix Bernadou was ordained to the priesthood in Paris after concluding his studies at the Seminary of Saint Sulpice in December 1840, successively moving to Algiers, where he was named canon of the cathedral chapter, becoming its archpriest in 1847. Appointed bishop of the diocese of Gap in his native France, Bernadou received his episcopal consecration at the cathedral of Castres on June 29, 1862. Constructing the local cathedral during his brief tenure, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of Sens on July 12, 1867, Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of June 7, 1886, receiving the title of Ss. Trinità al Monte Pincio in March of the following year. During his episcopate in Sens he soon became known for his charities among the poor. During the Franco-Prussian War, he availed churches to serve as hospitals and on January 16, 1871, wrote to Chancellor Bismarck begging him to save the city of Sens. A beautiful monument, featuring the Cardinal knelt in prayer, commemorates him at the cathedral of Sens, where he also lies interred.
