Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of the parish of San Julián of Ororbia, Manuel Arce y Ochotorena entered the Conciliar Seminary of Pamplona, later furthering his studies at the Pontifical Seminary of Zaragoza, and in Rome, at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical Roman Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas, earning doctorates in canon law and philosophy. Ordained priest there in July 1904, back in Spain he was soon named to the teaching staff of the Conciliar Seminary of Pamplona. Doctoral canon of the chapter of Pamplona as of 1914, he was named vicar capitular in 1922 and vicar general the following year. Elected bishop of the diocese of Zamora, he received his episcopal consecration on June 16, 1929. Transferred to the see of Oviedo on January 22, 1938, during his tenure he sought the reconstruction of both spiritual and material needs, as following the Spanish Civil War, there was no cathedral, seminary, episcopal palace, more than four hundred churches destroyed and one hundred and thirty priests assassinated. He managed the restoration of the cathedral, placed the first stones of the new seminary and the episcopal palace and initiated work on the construction of two hundred churches. Promoted to the archbishopric see of Tarragona on March 29, 1944, he took possession on October 26, and upon his entry on the following November 12, received a triumphant reception. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 18, 1946, receiving the title of Ss. Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio for days later. President of the Patronato del Real Monasterio de Santa María de Poblet, Arce was furthermore decorated with the grand cross of Isabel la Católica. Recovered in a Barcelona clinic, having received extreme unction due to his precarious conditions, the Cardinal requested to be transferred to the archiepiscopal palace of Tarragona where he soon passed out of an internal hemorrhage caused by duodenal ulcers. His remains were laid to rest in a specifically constructed sarcophagus in the baptistery chapel of his cathedral.
