Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born to a noble family in Padova, many are the forms in which his name is presented by his biographers. Known as the "Cardinal of Padua", having entered the Order of the Eremites of Saint Augustine at a very early age, he started his career as a professor at the University of Paris. Pope Innocent VI entrusted him with the foundation of a college at the University of Bologna. Elected prior general of his Order in Verona on May 17, 1377, Pope Gregory XI sent him as his nuncio before King Louis of Hungary. Created cardinal priest with the title of Santa Cecilia in the consistory of September 18, 1378 by Pope Urban VI, becoming thus the first Augustinian cardinal, he authored numerous works, Scriptural commentaries, lives of saints and sermons. Delivering the funeral oration of Petrarch in 1369, he corresponded with Saint Catherine of Siena. The Cardinal was assassinated in Rome after being hit by an arrow on the orders of the tyrant of Padua, Francesco Carrara, while crossing the bridge of Castello Sant'Angelo to enter the Vatican. Buried in the nowadays defunct church of San Trifone in Posterula, his remains were eventually transferred to the chapel of San Nicola de Tolentino in the church of Sant'Agostino. While sources in regards of the year of his death vary between 1381 and 1389, he is considered by many as a martyr for the freedom of the Church.
