Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Subbiano, Ferdinando Giuseppe Antonelli entered the Franciscan Order in Florence at the early age of thirteen in 1909. After rendering military service during the Great War, he pursued his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Antonianum Athenaeum and later at the Pontifical Institute of Christian Archaeology, where he was ordained priest in July 1922. Joining the teaching staff of the named Athenaeum in 1928, his presence lasted up to 1965, during which period he served twice as rector magnificus. General definitor of his Order between 1939 till 1945, he attended the Second Vatican Council as an expert. Named secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Rites on January 26, 1965, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular archbishopric see of Idicra on February 19 of the following year at the Patriarchal Vatican Basilica from Pope Paul VI. Named secretary of the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of the Saints on May 7, 1969, Antonelli was created cardinal deacon by the same Pope in the consistory of March 5, 1973, with the deaconry of San Sebastiano al Palatino. Opting for the order of cardinal priests, his deaconry was elevated pro illa vice to title on February 2, 1983. The Cardinal spent his last years in Rome, passing away at the venerable age of ninety seven. In accordance with his wishes, he was buried at the Franciscan Shrine of La Verna.
