Roman Catholic Cardinal. The son of a rich merchant, Roman born Angelo Bianchi served as chargé d'affaires at the Apostolic Nunciature in Switzerland between 1864 and 1868. Protonotary apostolic ad instar participantium, at the age of fifty six, he was elected as archbishop of the titular see of Mira, receiving his episcopal consecration on November 1, 1874 in Rome. Appointed apostolic nuncio in Bavaria on the following November 13, he was successively named secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars on June 8, 1877 and Apostolic Nuncio in Spain on September 30, 1879. Pope Leo XIII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of September 25, 1882, with the title of Santa Prassede. Member of the Council for the Administration of the Wealth of the Apostolic See, he was assigned as prefect of the Sacred Congregation of Rites on November 15, 1887, and pro-datary of His Holiness on March 14, 1889, an office which he held until his death. Transferred to the suburbicarian see of Palestrina while retaining in commendam the title of Santa Prassede on May 24, 1889, he was named as administrator of the nullius abbey of Subiaco on the following September 23. The Cardinal died in his native Rome at the age of seventy nine. His body was exposed in the parish church of Ss. Vincenzo ed Anastasio in Trevi and successively interred in his family's tomb at the Campo Verano Cemetery.
