Religious Figure. He first Bishop of the American Episcopal Church. he was the son of Samuel Samuel I, a Congregational minister who converted to Episcopalianism and moved to England. He graduated from Yale in 1748 and was ordained a minister in 1753. During the Revolutionary War, he was a Monarchist and opposed the Revolution. In 1789, with the appointment of himself and two other bishops by the English Parliament, the Protestant Episcopal Church of America was founded in Philadelphia. He was the rector of Saint James Church in New London, Connecticut.
