Duke of Alencon and Count of Perche. He inherited his noble titles after the untimely death of his father Jean I, and is also known for his close friendship with Joan of Arc. After a period of imprisonment with the English (1424-1429) following the defeat in Normandy (1424, August) he played an important part in the battle of the Loire during the Hundred Years War. The following years were turbulent and after conflicts with Charles VII of Valois and reversals of alliances and economic fortunes he was imprisoned on two occasions for treason and lese majesty. Jean II was sentenced to death in 1458 and 1474 and deprived of his titles but the sentence was commuted in both cases to life imprisonment.
