Religious Leader. Born in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, he founded the Congregation of Christian Brothers, which is a Catholic teaching order. He came from a wealthy Catholic family and, as a young man, went into business with his uncle. He soon became a prominent businessman in the town of Waterford, Ireland. He married and had a young daughter. However, his wife died shortly after their daughter was born. At that point, he underwent a spiritual transformation and dedicated his life to educating the poor of Ireland. In 1802, he founded the Congregation of Christian Brothers. The purpose of the order was to provide a quality, Catholic education to Ireland's poor. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 6, 1996. He is buried in Edmund Rice Chapel, on the grounds of Mount Sion, Waterford, Ireland.
