Rhode Island Governor. He was a successful dry goods businessman and President of the Rhode Island Union Bank, when he entered politics serving as Mayor of Newport, Rhode Island, (1854-55). He also was a member of both houses of the Rhode Island General Assembly and was president of the Rhode Island State Senate. When Governor William Sprague resigned to serve in the U.S. Senate, Cozzens as a Democrat became the 28th Governor of Rhode Island, serving Mar 03, 1863 to May 26, 1863. He ran for reelection but was defeated.
