US Congressman. An 1813 graduate of Brown University, he took up the profession of law following graduation. He served in the Rhode Island House of Representatives from 1816 to 1820 and again from 1826 to 1829, serving as speaker of that body from 1827 to 1829. From 1821 to 1825 he served as Representative from Rhode Island in the United States Congress. He then served as an associate justice on the Rhode Island Supreme Court from 1833 to 1835, and as chief justice of the same from 1835 until his death.
