Civil War Union Brigadier General. During the Civil War, he organized and equipped the 3rd New York Cavalry (also known as the Van Alen Cavalry) and received a commission as its Colonel on August 28, 1861. He received a commission as a Brigadier General on April 15, 1862. Due to illness he resigned from service on July 14, 1863. A man of wealth, he travelled extensively after his service. While sailing from Liverpool to New York aboard the Umbria, he fell overboard. His body was never recovered but a cenotaph was erected in his honor in the family plot of his son James J. Van Alen.
