Lithographer. Born in Germany, he arrived in the United States in 1850. In 1856, he was co-founder of lithography firm Prang and Mayer, which in 1860 became L. Prang and Company, located in Roxbury, Massachusetts. The company made items such as colorful advertisements, Civil War maps and reproductions of famous works of art. He is best known however for introducing the Christmas card to the masses in America in the 1870s, earning him the title of "Father of the American Christmas Card." He was also the author of a number of books such as "Prang Method of Art Instruction", "Prang Standards of Color", "Prang's Natural History Series" and "Prang's Aids for Objective Teaching". He later started the Prang Educational Company to publish books for art instruction in schools.
