Pioneer Physician. An 1840 Yale graduate, he believed it was improper for male physicians to deliver babies, and that such care would be better provided by female doctors. So in 1848 he founded, along with Dr. Israel T. Talbot, the Boston Female Medical College, later renamed the New England Female Medical Collge. It was the first medical college for women in the world, and among its graduates during its short history was Rebecca Lee, class of 1864, the first female African-American physician. A year after Dr. Gregory's death the college was absorbed into the Boston University School of Medicine.
