Naturalist, Geologist. McKee took over the position of Park Naturalist at Grand Canyon National Park in February 1929. Under his direction nature walks were established along the canyon rims, interpretive signs placed, educational pamphlets written and ranger talks began. He was the first Executive Secretary of the Grand Canyon Natural History Association. Trained as a geologist, he was highly respected in that field and earned world-wide recognition. He authored numerous scientific works on the nature and geology of the Grand Canyon and elsewhere, notably "Ancient Landscapes of the Grand Canyon Region", published in 1931. After leaving the Grand Canyon in 1940 he became a geology professor at the University of Arizona. In 1957 Northern Arizona University bestowed him with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. He was awarded the title Honorary Member of the Society for Sedimentary Science in 1970, and in 1975 he received the Society's highest medal of recognition, the William H. Twenhofel Medal for Excellence in Sedimentary Geology. McKee Point, a Colorado River overlook on the Hualapai Reservation, was named in his honor.
