Painter. He received acclaim as an American artist of the 20th century, who is mainly recognized for his melancholy paintings of lonely people in the big city; his paintings include a number of landscapes and shorescapes. His paintings have continued to grow in popularity since the 1950s. His art education began at the New York School of Art in the early 1900s where he studied illustration and painting. Early in his career, he supported himself as a commercial artist, painting in his free time and making several trips to Europe. While in Paris, France, he began painting the effects of sunlight. He produced a series of etchings beginning in 1915 and changing from oils, began to paint watercolors in 1923. He married Josephine Verstille Nivison on July 9, 1924, and she was often a model for his paintings. Hopper's work was the subject of numerous exhibitions and retrospectives throughout his career. He was the recipient of numerous honors and awards including election as a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1945, a Huntington Hartford Foundation Fellowship in 1956, and an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1965. He was introduced to a new generation in 1993 when a prominent recording artist featured his 1951 oil "Rooms by the Sea" as cover art, and his 1942 oil "Nighthawks" continues to appear in present day print and television advertising.
