Professional Boxer, Trainer. He boxed professionally from 1949 to 1970 as a middleweight, compiling a record of 62 wins, 13 losses and 1 draw, with 37 knockouts. He had victories over future world champions Jimmy Ellis, Freddie Little, and Joey Giardello, and he was stopped only twice in his career. He was the number 1 ranked middleweight in the world in the 1960's. After a gunshot wound ended his career, he went on to train some of the sport's top fighters such as Bennie Briscoe, Joe Frazier, Evander Holyfield, Leon Spinks and Pernell Whitaker. He was in Frazier's corner during the 1975 "Thriller in Manila" fight with Muhammad Ali and with Leon Spinks in 1978 when Spinks upset Ali. He was Evander Holyfield's trainer from 1984 to 1992 when Holyfield held the cruiserweight title and spent 2 years as the undisputed heavyweight champion. He was named Trainer of the Year in 1989 and 1990 by the Boxing Writers Association of America and he was elected into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2001.
