Artist. Ropes, who was deaf, was best known as a marine painter. He also produced landscapes, including one of George Washington's Mount Vernon. Many of his ship paintings are exhibited at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Other works are on display at the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
