Musician, Entertainer. Credited with creating the "melodic" style of 5 string banjo playing, Bobby Thompson is perhaps one of the most revered and well known banjo players of all time. As a member of Nashville's elite "A Team" of session musicians throughout the 1960s, 70s and early 80s, just about every recording that had a banjo on it, featured the talents of Bobby Thompson. The list of recordings he played on is endless. He recorded with everyone from Johnny Cash, to Neil Young, to Perry Como to Loretta Lynn; was a member of groups Area Code 615 and Barefoot Jerry and early in his career was a member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys as well as one of Jim & Jesse's Virginia Boys. Bobby Thompson would most instantly be recognized, however, as a cast member of the long running "Hee Haw" series. His banjo was a key part of the tv show's theme song as well as his rather stoic demeanor which contrasted his counterpart, Roy Clark. Multiple Sclerosis forced Thompson into an early retirement in the late 1980s.
