College Basketball Player. Born Eric Wilson Gathers Jr. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was a college basketball star. He and Bo Kimble, his teammate, both originally played at the University of Southern California (USC) but later transferred to Loyola Marymount University (LMU). Hank was the second player in history to lead the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I in scoring and rebounding during the 1988–1989 season. His first signs of a heart condition occurred in 1989 when he collapsed at the free throw line during a home game with the University of California, Santa Barbara. He was then diagnosed with an abnormal heartbeat (exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia). In March of 1990, while playing a West Coast Conference tournament, he collapsed again, he was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital. His life was dramatized in a TV movie, Final Shot: The Hank Gathers Story, in 1992.
