Artist. Born Tamara Gorska in Warsaw, Poland, to a wealthy family, she received a privileged education which included an art tour of Italy to Venice, Rome, and Florence. She later moved to Petrograd, Russia, where she married a wealthy attorney, Tadeusz Lempicki, in 1916. During the 1918 Bolshevik Revolution Tadeusz was imprisoned, and Tamara arranged for his release, and immediately afterwards, they fled to Paris. In France, she enrolled at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere and learned to paint under the watchful eye of Maurice Denis. She soon became a prolific artist, exhibiting her works at the 1925 Art Deco Exposition. Her canvases were filled with monumental figures, depicting the influence which the works of Michelangelo had on her. Her distinct style marked her as one of the prominent painters of the Art Deco movement. She married for a second time in 1933, to Baron Raoul Kuffner. In 1939, they moved to America and exhibited Tamara’s work in exhibitions exclusively dedicated to her at the Paul Reinart Gallery, at Julian Levy’s, at Courvoisier Galleries, and at the Milwaukee Institute. In 1960, her style changed as she switched from brush and oil to works with spatula. Her subject matter became more abstract. She stopped painting altogether in 1962 after Raoul’s demise and moved to Mexico.
