Adventurer. While sailing on board his ketch "Gypsy Moth IV" (from August 27, 1966 to January 27, 1967), he became the second man to sail alone around the world; the first man to sail alone from west to east; the first to go the longest distance at sea before a port of call (approx. 15,000 nautical miles); and the first to do it in 226 days (bettering the time set by the fastest clipper ships a century earlier). The feat earned him a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth, who used the sword given to Sir Francis Drake, the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe.
