His first book to make the New York Times best-seller list was "Pavarotti: My Own Story" (1981), an "as told to" autobiography of the great opera star; he later collaborated with Pavarotti on a second autobiography. He drew substantial critical praise for 1986's "Lilian Helman: The Image, The Woman," an unflinching portrait of the controversial playwright. Helman fiercely and publicly opposed this biography, as it alleged that she falsified or embellished many facets of her life. In the harrowing "Harvard's Secret Court" (2005), he uncovered the university's clandestine efforts to purge its gay students and faculty in the early 20th century.
