Professional Football Player. Robert Clayton Freeman played football at Auburn University from 1951 to 1955 before he signed with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League, disappointing the Baltimore Colts who had hoped to draft him. The Los Angeles Rams were not deterred and took him in the 5th round of the NFL draft in 1956. Instead of going to the CFL, he joined the service and played for the Fort Jackson Eagles in 1956. He began his NFL career as a halfback and defensive back with the Cleveland Browns in 1957. After two years with them, he played a year with the Green Bay Packers. They traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles who won the world championship in 1960. He finished up his NFL career with the Washington Redskins in 1962. Much traveled, he had played with four different NFL teams in six years. In 73 NFL games, he intercepted a total of fifteen passes that he returned for 204 yards. After his playing days ended, he was a coach at Auburn University for ten years.
