Professional Football Player. He graduated from Purcell High School in Cincinnati in 1948 and continued his education at Xavier University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business in 1952. Hoffman lettered in football, baseball and basketball in high school and his talent won him a scholarship to Xavier University for football, where he played defensive end. He was drafted in the 5th round in 1952 by the Chicago Bears. He played defensive end for the Bears for five seasons (1952, 1955-58). He missed the 1953-54 seasons when he served in the Army during the Korean War. When his football career ended, he entered the car business, where he was a salesman, manager and buyer. The Buddy LaRosa Hall of Fame recognized his contribution to football when it inducted him in 1987. Purcell High School and Xavier University followed suit in 1994 and 1997, respectively.
