Motion Picture Director and Producer. He studied engineering and law at Ohio State University. He then worked as film salesman and movie theater manager. After serving in an artillery unit in World War I he went to California and after a period of work as assistant director he began directing films in 1921. Starting with mostly routine melodramas, Western and action pictures, he gradually moved on to more prestigious productions, becoming one of Hollywood`s leading directors in the late 1920s and 30s. Among his credits are “The Thundering Herd” (1925), “Volcano” (1926/with Wallace Beery), “White Gold” (1927), “The Valiant” (1929/with Paul Muni), “Transatlantic” (1931), “Sherlock Holmes” (1932), “The Power and the Glory” (1933/with Spencer Tracy), ”Evelyn Prentice” (1934/with William Powell and Myrna Loy) and “The Princess Comes Across” (1936/with Carole Lombard. He directed two films in England, among them “Fire Over England” (1937) and after returning to Hollywood found major film assignments difficult to line up. After a succession of low-budget productions, including “Johnny Come Lately” (1943/with James Cagney), he retired from the screen in 1946, dying from a throat malignancy. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
