Actor. A seasoned actor on Australian, London and Broadway stages, he came to films in the late 1920s in elderly, usually kind roles. His best known part was as the blind hermit, who befriends the monster, in “The Bride of Frankenstein” (1935). Other roles included "The Mysterious Dr. Fu Man Chu” (1929, as Nayland Smith), “The Vagabond King” (1930), “The Count of Monte Cristo” (1934) and “The Prisoner of Shark Island” (1936). He died from pneumonia and was cremated at Forest Lawn, Glendale.
