U.S. Senator. He engaged in agricultural pursuits, was collector of taxes 1801, town auditor 1802 and town moderator of Tiverton, Rhode Island, in 1805. Entering formal politics, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Samuel J. Potter, serving (1804-09). After leaving the Senate, he was a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives, in 1810 and Brigadier General of the Rhode Island State Militia, during the War of 1812.
