He worked with several well-known literary figures including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. For a time, he was the highest-paid magazine writer in the United States. Pallbearers at his funeral included James T. Fields, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Samuel Gridley Howe, and James Russell Lowell.
