Major League Baseball player. Spent 18 years in the major leagues as a pitcher, winning 211 games and was named to 7 All-Star teams. Made his debut in 1945 with the Detroit Tigers, pitching in five games. After spending the next two full seasons in the minor leagues, he returned to the majors for good in 1948. On November 10, 1948, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, were he would pitch the next 13 seasons. He became one of the best pitchers in baseball, leading the league in strikeouts in 1953, and winning 20 games in back to back years, 1956 and 1957. An important piece in the White Sox American League Championship in 1959, he pitched in 3 games in the 1959 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. After the 1961 season, he was traded to the San Francisco Giants, and would finish his career after the 1964 season. He retired with 1,999 career strikeouts and a 3.27 earned run average. He holds the White Sox franchise record of 1,796 strikeouts. The White Sox retired his number 19 in 1987, and he was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2007, he was honored with a statue at the White Sox home ballpark of U.S. Cellular Field.
