Actor. From his first role in "They Won't Forget" (1937) to his last television series "Perry Mason, The Case of the Libelous Locket" (1963), he appeared in 148 big screen and television shows; many were uncredited roles while under contract to MGM. These included character parts in "An American in Paris" (1951), "Singin' in the Rain" (1952), "The Bad and the Beautiful" (1952) and "It's Always Fair Weather" (1955). His first major big screen credit was "Below the Deadline" (1946); he played Arthur Brennan. Among his numerous television/television series performances, he appeared as Matt Brockway on Lassie (1954 to 1957), Santa Claus in "The Jack Benny Show" (1954 to 1961), Bert Stanley in "The Westinghouse Playhouse" (1961), and, his most well-known role, Mayor John Peoples in "The People's Choice" (1955 to 1958).
