US Senator. Maryland Governor. Attended preparatory school at Tennent School in Hartsville, Pennsylvania; failing eyesight and poor health ended his official schooling. He continued his law studies with his father, was admitted to the Maryland bar in 1861, and set up his practice in Elkton, Maryland. His first foray into politics was in 1867 when he served as a delegate to the Maryland Constitutional Convention. He served with the Maryland House of Delegates from 1872 to 1874. When Governor Whyte resigned to assume his Senate seat, Groome was elected as Governor (one of the youngest ever to serve) and held the position from March 4, 1874 to January 12, 1876. He served in the Senate from March 4, 1879 until March 3, 1885. He was appointed as Collector of Customs for the Port of Baltimore from 1889 until his death.
