Civil War Union Army Officer, US Congressman. Born in Flemingsburg, Fleming County, Kentucky, he moved to Indiana as a young boy, and was educated at the Collegiate Institute in Waveland, Indiana. With the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 Patton enlisted as a Corporal with Company H, 38th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, eventually attaining the rank of Colonel and commander of the regiment. Honorably mustered out on July 15, 1865, following his military service he furthered his education by graduating from the Chicago Medical College in 1867. Patton became a physician in Remington, Jasper County, Indiana, and also served as the pension examiner for the town. In 1890 he was elected as a Democrat to represent Indiana's 10th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1891 until March 3, 1893. He declined to be a candidate for reelection in 1892, and chose instead to be appointed as the Receiver for Public Lands in Oklahoma. Later in life he returned to his medical practice until his death in 1914.
