U.S. Congressman. Born in Alma, Allegany County, New York, George Shaw moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin as an infant. He obtained his primary education in the public schools, and graduated from the International Business College of Chicago, Illinois. Shaw then joined his father in running the Daniel Shaw Lumber Company, one of the state’s largest manufactures of lumber and building products. George remained the Corporate Secretary throughout his life. Keenly interested in applying technological advances to the business, George mastered the skill of telegraphy and also became a proficient electrician. His understanding of electricity, in an era before it was widely used, resulted in his advice being sought after by other companies and municipalities. In 1876 he was elected to the Eau Claire Common Council, and he became the Mayor of Eau Claire in 1888 and 1889. In 1890 he was elected as the Supreme Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias of the World, a fraternal organization of over 400,000 members worldwide, and served until 1892. He was elected as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives later that year, and served from March 4, 1893 until his death on August 27, 1894.
