Governor of the Nebraska Territory. Born in Pendleton, Anderson County, South Carolina, Francis Burt received his education at the Pendleton Academy. He read the law at the offices of Warren R. Davis, and established his own legal practice. In 1832 he was a delegate to South Carolina’s Nullification Convention, a statewide conference which sought to abolish the Federal Tariffs of 1828 and 1832. Also in 1832, Burt was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly, and served twelve years. He was elected as the State Treasurer in 1844, serving one term. He was also a member of the 1852 South Carolina Constitutional Convention. In 1853 Burt was appointed to an auditor’s position at the U.S. Treasury Department. In 1854 President Franklin Pierce selected Francis Burt as the first Governor of the Nebraska Territory. Burt arrived in Nebraska, taking the oath of office on October 16, 1854. Sadly he died just two days later, and his body was returned to South Carolina for burial. Burt County, Nebraska, is named in his honor.
