U.S. Congressman. He attended Hopkinsville Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1847, and commenced to practice law in Cadiz, Kentucky. He was clerk of the Trigg County Circuit Court (1851 to 1853) and elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fourth Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving from 1855 to 1861. With the advent of the Civil War, because of his support in the South's succession from the Union, he was one of five Congressmen expelled from their seats in Congress for disloyalty to the Union. After leaving office, few men worked harder for the Confederate cause than he. He served as a Colonel of the 8th Regiment, Kentucky Infantry, Confederate Army. In addition, he was president of the Kentucky Southern Conference, served in the Provisional Confederate Congress (1861 to 1862), and was a Senator in the First and Second Confederate Provisional Congresses, (1862 to 1865). Following the conclusion of the Civil War, he was indicted for treason but released on bond and never prosecuted. He then resumed the practice of law until his death at age 40.
