Civil War Union Army Officer. He was the younger brother of Brevet Major General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, and served with him in the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted in the 20th Maine on May 29, 1862, and was soon promoted to 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant. He would serve with his brother, who was first a Lieutenant Colonel, then Colonel and commander of the regiment, then finally a Brigadier General, through the battles of Fredericksburg, Virginia (December 1862) and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (July 1863). He continued to serve with the 20th Maine after his brother became a brigade commander, being promoted to Major in February 1865. When his brother was severely wounded in front of Petersburg, Virginia in 1864, Thomas Chamberlain stayed by his side and helped him with his recovery. He was brevetted Lieutenant Colonel, US Volunteers on March 15, 1865, and was honorably mustered out on July 16, 1865. After the war, despite his military career, he drifted from job to job. He struggled with alcoholism, and later suffered from heart and lung disease.
