US Congressman. Moving to Florida, as a young adult he graduated from the University of Florida, in 1934, studied law, was admitted to the bar and was a lawyer in private practice at Jacksonville, Florida. He was elected to the Florida State Legislature, serving (1941-42). During World War II, served as a Captain in the U.S. Army, as a guerrilla fighter in actions in the Philippines, being awarded the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal, plus the Philippines Legion of Honor and the Gold Cross. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first Congress and to the next twenty-one succeeding Congresses, (1949-93). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he live in retirement until his death from a heart attack at age 92. Regarded as fine representative, he is the longest-serving member of either House of Congress in Florida's history.
