U.S. Congressman, Missouri Governor. He graduated from Yale University, in 1839, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and established a legal career in Sparta, Missouri, in 1842. He served as circuit attorney at Sparta, for several years and served as a Lieutenant of the 1st Missouri Cavalry, during the Mexican War. In 1847, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirtieth, Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving until 1853. He was Lieutenant Governor of Missouri, (1861-64) and also served as a Brigadier General in command of Missouri Militia, during the Civil War. When Governor Hamilton Gamble died in office in January 1864, Hall assumed the duties as the 17th Governor of Missouri, serving until 1865. During his tenure, the war's devastating effects on the state's economy and industry were dealt with. After leaving office, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 62.
