William Henry Hulsey (1838-1909) - Find a Grave Memorial

Civil War Confederate Army Officer. In 1861,he enlisted as a private in the 6th Georgia infantry and by March 1862 was promoted to major of the 42nd Georgia infantry. He fought at the battles of Cumberland Gap and Tazewell, Tennessee, and from December 1862 to July 1863 in the Vicksburg Campaign where his unit under the command of General John Pemberton surrendered. After his release, he resumed his command of the 42nd Georgia infantry and in November 1863 fought at the battle of Missionary Ridge in Chattagnooga, Tennessee. In 1864, he was injured during the Atlanta Campaign and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1869 he served one term as Mayor of Atlanta, Georgia and founded the Atlanta Public School System.
