It now says:
In memory of the early travelers who perished in the explosion of the Steamboat Big Hatchie on July 23, 1845. Those buried here in unmarked graves and those whose bodies were never recovered from the waters of the Missouri River.
I am looking for research information to support this date of 1845 to add to this memorial.

In memory of the early pioneers who perished in the explosion of the Steamboat "Big Hatchie" at the wharf in Hermann in 1842. The thirty-five dead that lie buried here in unmarked graves and the many whose bodies were never recovered from the waters of the Missouri River. Erected by Brush & Palette Club Inc.
