German-American Actor. He was known for his comic portrayals of villains. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, studied electrical engineering and served in the Imperial German Army during World War I. He moved to the United States in 1924 and appeared in many Broadway productions. He appeared in four Marx Brothers movies including A Night at the Opera, A Day at the Races, and A Night in Casablanca. In 1953 he played what was perhaps his most famous role as Schultz, the POW camp guard in the movie Stalag 17.
