High King of Ireland. Building on the foundations established by his father, Cennétig mac Lorcáin, and elder brother, Mathgamain mac Cennétig, he succeeded as king of Munster and eventually through his unyielding efforts was acknowledged as the High King of Ireland, which had, at least nominally, lordship over all of Ireland and its lesser kings. His succession as High King ended the domination of the O'Neill family in that office and firmly established the O'Brien family as one of the great Irish dynasties. The Battle of Clontarf, in which he was killed, saw Brian lead an army that confronted a Norse-Irish allied army. Although Brian was killed, his army was victorious and it was seen as a great victory, ending the Norse domination of Ireland, although some modern-day historians contend the demise of Norse influence has been overstated. Brian Boru is considered one of the most successful Irish monarchs.
