Dale Harward Curtis was born Tuesday, February 12, 1929 in Salt Lake City to Ruel Curtis and Mary Zola Harward Curtis. He grew up in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School, Class of 1947.
At the time of his death, Dale was an active member and High Priest in the Legacy Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission to Western Canada. Throughout his life, Dale was a member of the Lincoln Ward, Kearns Thirteenth Ward, and the River Ridge First Ward.
He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He spent much of the late 1950s living in Washington, D.C. and working as a waiter at Hot Shoppes Restaurant. Dale was employed by United Airlines in ground services, reservations, and air freight.
He loved his family, racquetball, plays, classical music, books, genealogy, and politics. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He believed that "you can live without reading, but not very well, for reading is the poetry of life."
Dale lived in Kearns for most of his life, residing with his parents in the family home at 4852 South 4180 West. He spent the last months of his life at the Legacy Retirement Community in South Jordan, Utah, where he made many friends.
Dale suffered a massive stroke on June 10, 2001 and was hospitalized at St. Mark's Hospital in Millcreek. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 20, 2001 just after 4:00 p.m. surrounded by his loving family. He was seventy-two years old.
He was survived by his brothers, Neldon DeVon (Bertha) Curtis of Cottonwood Heights, Jay Kent (Bonnie) Curtis of Taylorsville; sisters, Sara Flink of South Jordan, Rula (John) Flink of Ogden, Barbara (William) Inkley of Magna; brothers-in-law, Oris Black of Blanding, Normand Gibbons of West Valley City, and Dee (Ann) Bradshaw of South Jordan; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dale was preceded in death by his parents Ruel Curtis (1985) and Zola Curtis (1980); sisters, Mary Phyrl Black (1991), Arva Gae Gibbons (1998), and Linda Kaye Bradshaw (1990); brothers, Ruel Wayne Curtis (1925), and Son Curtis (1926); and brother-in-law, Hendrik Flink (1992).
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 25, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the River Ridge First Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 10124 South Temple Drive (1300 West) in South Jordan. A private family viewing was held on Sunday, June 24, 2001 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at McDougal Funeral Home located at 4330 South Redwood Road (1700 West) in Taylorsville. A public viewing was held one hour prior to the services at the church.
Dale was laid to rest following the conclusion of the funeral services beside his parents and sister, Gae, in the family plot at Redwood Memorial Estates Cemetery in Taylorsville.
