Former Archbishop of Capua, Monsignor Luigi Diligenza was born in Arzano, Naples, Italy, on February 10, 1921, and was ordained to the priesthood at 22 years of age on August 8, 1943.

Earning a degree in sacred theology with specialization in church history, he furthermore obtained a diploma in paleography and archival studies. Named parish priest of the S. Agrippino parish of his native Arzano in 1955, he founded the Centro Tecnico Professionale per l'Addestramento Giovanile.

Between 1966 and 1978, Diligenza served as archiepiscopal delegate for the Italian Catholic Action and taught history at the Archiepiscopal Lyceum and the Pontificia Facoltà Teologica dell'Italia Meridionale, Sez. San Tommaso.

Rector of the Archiepiscopal Major Seminary of of Capodimonte, Naples, at 57 years of age, Diligenza was appointed Archbishop of Capua by Pope Paul VI following the retirement of Monsignor Tommaso Leonetti. He received his episcopal consecration from Cardinal Corrado Ursi, assisted by Archbishops Leonetti and Gaetano Pollio PIME., on April 23, 1978.

During his episcopate, Pope John Paul II (1920 - 2005), visited Capua in May 1992, on the occasion of the XVI Plenary Capuan Council of 392 AD. Diligenza wrote 30 pastoral letters and announced 7 ecclesial conveniums.

Monsignor Diligenza retired from the pastoral government of his see at 76 years of age on April 29, 1997, and was succeeded by Archbishop Bruno Schettino. Moving to his native Arzano, on February 9, 2011, on the eve of his ninetieth birthday, Diligenza celebrated a thanksgiving Mass at the Major Seminary of Naples. Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, Archbishop of Naples, was among those in attendance.

Diligenza passed unexpectedly away shortly afterward, on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, aged 90, in Arzano. His body was laid out in state at the parish of Sant'Agrippino, from where is was transported to Capua, arriving at the cathedral on Thursday, May 26, at 11 am.

Funeral Mass, presided by the named Archbishop Schettino, which saw also the participation of Cardinals Crescenzio Sepe and Agostino Vallini, Archbishop Bruno Forte and several other prelates, was celebrated on Friday, May 27, at 15.30 pm., inside the Cathedral of Capua, where interment also took place at the end of the celebration, in the chapel of Santa Rita.
