Adventurer, Governor, Samuel Argall born in England, became a sea captain, and served as Governor of Colonial Virginia and was knighted by King James I in 1622. He kidnapped Pocahontas for ransom to ensure safety for the British. He pioneered a new and swifter sea route for ships of the Virginia Company that also avoided conflict with Spanish forces. In 1609 as Captain for the Virginia Company he commanded ship that brought much need supplies to Jamestowne. His efforts came at a critical time, the beginning of the "Starving Time" in Jamestowne when the Jamestowne Colony came close to extinction. He was captain of the ship "Treasurer" on the voyage from England to Jamestowne, Virginia that arrived in February of 1613 with Captain John Clay, one of Jamestowne's ancient planters aboard. In 1617, as Governor, he replaced the original church in Jamestowne with a new and smaller church, in which stood at the same site where the current brick church stands today.Captain He died at sea, off Cadiz, aboard the ship "Swiftsure".
