William Stewart was the son of John Stewart, who was born October 16, 1734, in Prince George County, Virginia, and Ann Haw. He was born in Hanover County, Virginia, on November 8, 1762.
He married Mary Penn November 8, 1783, in Amherst County, Virginia. She died in Georgia. She was the mother of all of his children. He then married Martha B. Wilson on December 17, 1837, in Monroe County, Georgia. He died in the family home in Schley County, Georgia, on June 17, 1848.
The following information was obtained from papers on file with the War Department for his claim for a pension #W. 11555 for his military service during the Revolutionary War:
While a resident of Amherst County, Virginia, he enlisted in the fall of 1778, serving six months as sergeant and issuing commissary in Captain Pamplin's company in Colonel Daniel Gaines' Virginia Regiment. He served a short tour in 1779 or 1780. Early in 1781, he served six months as sergeant in Captain John Christian's company, Colonel Vance's Virginia regiment. From sometime in September 1781, he served about two months as sergeant in (his brother) Captain John Stewart's company, Colonel Tucker's Virginia regiment, and was in the Siege of Yorktown. He served in both the Virginia Continental Line and in the Virginia Militia.
After the war, he moved from Amherst County, Virginia, to Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and lived there 30 or 40 years. He then moved to Monroe County, Georgia. While living in Monroe County, he applied for a pension on October 23, 1832. His address in 1837 was Forsyth, Georgia. His widow at the time of his death in 1848 was Martha B. Stewart, who was allowed a widow's pension based on her application executed March 3, 1855, (certificate #5203) while she was living in Monroe County. She was also allowed 160 acres of bounty land (Warrant #38559-160) based on her application executed December 5, 1855.
