A Finnish Olympic gold medalist. He was one of the Finnish gymnastics team who dominated the gymnastics at the 1948 Olympics in London. He won gold medals in the vault, the pommel horse and the combined team.
In his home country, Aaltonen represented Karhulan Katajaiset and Elanto's Isku, among others. He was the first athlete to win a world championship representing a Finnish TUL club (Formerly a member of a nationally ineligible left-wing club).
Aaltonen edusti kotimaassaan muun muassa Karhulan Katajaisia ja Elannon Iskua. Hän oli ensimmäinen TUL:n seuran edustajana maailmanmestaruuden voittanut urheilija.
