Louise Aandahl Stockman, 86, a lifelong North Dakota resident, died in Lawrence, KS, on December 2, 2014. Her death was attributed to the complications of Parkinson's disease.

Louise Aandahl, christened Mamie Louise, was born on December 7, 1927, on the ancestral Aandahl farm in Svea Township, Barnes County, near Litchville, ND. She was the first-born child of Fred G. Aandahl and Luella Brekke Aandahl. She spent her childhood and youth on the family farm with her parents and two sisters, Margaret born in 1930 and Marilyn born in 1932.

Louise Aandahl attended Svea Consolidated School for ten years (1933-1943), graduating from Litchville High School in 1944 at the age of 16. She was a student for four years at the University of North Dakota, graduating with honors in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a concentration in history. In later years, she pursued further studies in history and archival practice at North Dakota State University.

Louise Aandahl and Jacque Stockman were married in Grand Forks, ND, on September 21, 1947. Four children were born to their marriage: Catherine, John, Caroline, and Joseph.

After living in Grand Forks for three years, the family established their home in Fargo in 1950, and Louise has been a resident of Fargo continuously since that time. Because of declining health, Louise has spent extended periods of time in recent years near family in Vancouver, WA, and Lawrence, KS.

During the active years of her life in Fargo, Louise Stockman was directly involved in her family's business affairs. She was also fully committed to volunteer endeavors, variously serving the local community in leadership positions for school, church, charitable, political, and historical organizations. Further, Louise achieved recognition for distinguished service to her alma mater with the University of North Dakota Sioux Award (1991), and she earned state-wide influence and prominence as an advocate for libraries and museums. She served on the board of directors of the UND Foundation, the UND Alumni Association, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, the North Dakota Humanities Council, and the Fargo Public Library. She was president of the board for the UND Foundation, the State Historical Society of North Dakota, and the Fargo Public Library.

Louise Aandahl Stockman is survived by her husband Jacque Stockman and by her four children: Catherine Campbell, Lawrence, KS; John Stockman, Hampton, MN; Caroline Stockman, Calgary, AB; and Joseph Stockman, Acworth, GA. She is survived also by her nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one sister Marilyn Aandahl Johnson. Her father Fred G. Aandahl died in 1966, her sister Margaret Aandahl Moran in 1968, and her mother Luella Brekke Aandahl in 1993.

A private graveside committal at the ancestral Aandahl plot in Hillside Cemetery, Valley City, ND, will be held at a date yet to be determined.

The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the Fargo Public Library Endowment Fund care of the FM Area Foundation or to the Special Collections at the Chester Fritz Library, UND Foundation.
