Andrew White Abbitt, retired director of pharmacy at Eastern State Hospital and former owner and operator of pharmacies in Newport News and Hampton, died of heart problems Thursday at his home.

He was 82 and had lived in Williamsburg for the past 35 years.

Mr. Abbitt retired from Eastern State Hospital in 1973, after more than 15 years of service.

In 1961, he was named Hospital Pharmacist of the Year by the Virginia Society of Hospital Pharmacists.

Mr. Abbitt also had served twice as president of the Peninsula Pharmaceutical Association.

From the early 1940s until about 1955, Mr. Abbitt owned and operated Abbitt's North End Pharmacy, next to old Riverside Hospital in Newport News, and Abbitt Pharmacy in Hilton Village, a Newport News subdivision. About the same time he also owned and operated Southampton Pharmacy in Hampton.

A Newport News native, he earned his undergraduate degree at the College of William and Mary. In 1937, he graduated from Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy, where he served as president of Kappa Psi pharmacy fraternity.

He had served in the Virginia Army National Guard.

He was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, the College of William and Mary Alumni Association, Sigma Nu fraternity, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Jamestowne Society and the Order of Stars and Bars, a group of descendants of Civil War officers.

He was a former member of the James River Country Club in Newport News and had been president of the former Warwick Kiwanis Club.

He was known as an avid quail hunter and bird dog handler.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Rose Abbitt; four daughters, Sally Godwin Kennedy of Racine, Wisc., Ann Beveridge Hohenberger of Defiance, Ohio, Merry Webb Outlaw of Williamsburg and Elizabeth Rose Abbitt of San Diego, Calif.; three sons, William S. Abbitt, Andrew W. Abbitt II and James Carter Abbitt, all of Richmond; and a devoted comrade, Morris Canaday of Williamsburg.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Monday at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Williamsburg.

The family suggests that memorial gifts be made to the American Heart Association or the Williamsburg Animal Shelter.
